Walking away from chasing pattern development and saying hello to creativity, individuality and skill.
You know those times when you're working on a project but in the back of your mind you have that odd nagging feeling you can't quite shake? Much like a grain of sand irritating an oyster, that nagging feeling just keeps persisting until you finally stop and look at it.
I've had that nagging feeling ever since I decided I wanted to switch out of designing clothes for my clients to creating a sewing pattern company. Shortly after starting Fresh Press Patterns I realized I was back in the same loop. Still making patterns, still sewing and still chasing... make, make, make... post, post, post.
I didn't like it... and that nagging feeling just wouldn't go away.
After much reflection I realized that what I love most about the whole creative process of design and sewing is the precision and skill of finishing a garment. I love the craft of making something beautiful! And I'm excited to share the ready to wear approach to sewing.
So how does this translate to Fresh Press Patterns? I realized I need a whole new approach to my platform. Less pattern releases (which I've already mastered, lol!), and more sewing and education and sharing of skills.
If we're to build sustainable wardrobes and truly step out of consumerism, we need to sew clothes that not only fit our lifestyles but also look beautiful on the inside! Clothes that last. Clothes you take the time to finish. When you follow me along you'll learn quickly that the ready to wear techniques not only give you a nicer and professionally finished garment, the approach also will speed up your sewing! Win, win.
Let's embrace creativity, individuality and skill!
Now of course, a blog is nice ( does anyone read anymore?) but the skill building will take place on YouTube, 'cause who wants to read about it when they can watch it?! The plan is to launch YouTube in September and follow that with a course... but first, a big dose of courage to leap into the new vision. That takes place this August.
Stay tuned!
